What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is considered as one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda.  In Sanskrit, Ashwagandha means the smell of a horse.  The root of this plant smells like horse sweat, so it is termed as Ashwagandha. The Ashwagandha is known as Withania somnifera in Latin.

Ashwagandha and Ayurveda

The qualities of Ahswagandha as per Ayurveda is given below

Rasa (Taste): Katu (Pungent), Tikta (Bitter), Kashaya (Astringent)

Guna (qualities): Snigdha (Oily) and Laghu (light to digest and absorb)

Veerya (Potency):  Ushna (Hot)

Vipaka (taste after digestion): Katu (Pungent)

Tridosha effect: specially balances Kapha and Vata
