What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a group of disease. Commonly, this group represents inflammation, pain, stiffness and tenderness of joints. There are many types of Arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Gout etc. Here, we will focus on Osteoarthritis.
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease. The major victims are elderly and obese people. In our joints, there is a protective cover of cartilage at the end of the bones. It reduces the friction of the joint and provides lubrication to stay up to the mark. In Osteoarthritis, this cartilage becomes damaged. It increases the friction between the joints. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint but Knee joint pain is the common most.
Osteoarthritis and Ayurveda
As per Ayurveda, Osteoarthritis can be correlated with the disease ‘Sandhivata’. In Sandhivata, the vitiatied/abnormal vaayu dosha locates the joints and deteriorates it.

How to diagnose osteoarthritis? Well, the doctor can diagnose Osteoarthritis on examination by tapping the joints, feeling the crepitation and moving the joints. There are also some of the tests by which the doctor can rule out osteoarthritis such as,
- Joint Aspiration
If we look at modern medicines, there are not many options available as far as osteoarthritis treatment is concerned. Your orthopedic doctor may give you pain killers to relieve pain, some supplements, and physiotherapy for betterment. At last, he will suggest the surgery (Knee replacement surgery or TKR)

- Exercise regularly
- Accidently twisting or turning the joints might be harmful
- Do regular Pranayams like Anuloma-Viloma and Omkara
- Apply hot & cold fomentation for pain relief
